A plumber is a soldier in the RAE responsible for performing advanced drainage, sanitary, water supply and roof plumbing, intermediate gas and mechanical services plumbing, and general building tasks associated with the construction, repair and maintenance of vertical and horizontal structures and the provision of engineering services.
Duties
- Carry out site preparation prior to plumbing tasks.
- Erect scaffolding (up to 4 metres in height).
- Lay and maintain storm water drainage.
- Lay and maintain house drainage.
- Interpret requirements for the employment, waive and retention. eg interpretation of by-laws.
- Install water service pipes and fittings.
- Install storage facilities for water-supply.
- Install roofing and plumbing.
- Install gas services and appliances.
- Organise trench excavation and timbering.
- Operate and maintain pipe and metal cutting threading and bending machines.
- Install sewerage reticulation systems.
Educational Requirement
Completion of Australian Year 10 education (or equivalent) with passes in English, Mathematics and Science (with a Physics content) and one other subject.
Note: Consumer Math's, General Math's, Math's in Society and similarly 'modified' Math's subjects are not suitable for entry to the Technical and Trade Scheme.
Employment Training
Modules 1, 2 and 4 of the Combat Engineer IET : 12 weeks
You will then undertake a 12 month Plumbers course at the Army Logistic Training Centre (ALTC), Bonegilla, Victoria. This is followed by up to 36 months of On the Job Experience (OJE) at the School of Military Engineering (SME), Moorebank, Sydney. This will consist of training provided by civil contractors and detachments to Land Command units for OJE tasks as required. Trainees are taught introductory skills in drainage, sanitary plumbing, gasfitting, roofing, mechanical services and water supply. Studies that will lead to licensing include drainage, sanitary plumbing, roofing and water supply.

Employment Location
Plumbers are mainly employed in Combat Engineer Regiments and Construction Squadrons. They are located at Townsville, Brisbane, Sydney and Darwin.
Pay
This particular job is classified as a Pay Group 4 occupation upon completion of full trade qualifications.
Civil Accreditation
On successful completion of the training requirements, graduates are eligible for a Certificate of Completion issued by ALTC.
Trainees are also eligible to apply for registration with the Victorian Plumbing and Gasfitting Board, and apply for a Victorian Plumbing Licence, both of which are nationally recognised. The Victorian Licence is reciprocal in all states of Australia. Other civil accreditation includes:
- Certificate IV in Construction Site Supervision is granted to personnel on being assessed as competent as an ARA Corporal.
- Diploma of Construction Works Supervision is granted to personnel on being assessed as competent as an ARA Sergeant.
- Advanced Diploma of Construction Works Management is granted to personnel on being assessed as competent as an ARA Warrant Officer.
