Physical Training Instructor

A Physical Training Instructor (PTI) is a RAAMC soldier who is responsible for the provision of physical conditioning and rehabilitation to the Australian soldier and the ADF in a variety of settings. The PTI is employed in the prevention of injuries, delivery of Military Self Defence (MSD) and the Combat Fitness Leader Courses (CFLC). Also, the PTI delivers the Defence Injury Prevention Program (DIPP), conducts fitness assessments of ADF members, physical training, and coordinates sporting events and other specialist activities. The SGT Supervisor is required to analyse, plan, implement and supervise advanced integrated conditioning programs and the provision of health services support. At WO2 PTI Manager level, there is a requirement to manage the integrated conditioning systems and injury prevention elements within the command area. The WO2 PTI Manager is also responsible to identify the training needs for the MSD and CFLC for their local military area, as well as provide integrated logistic and health support. There is a WO1 PTI posted to the Australian Defence Force Physical Training School as a senior instructor. Also, currently there are WO1 PTIs posted into the position of Injury Prevention Advisors to Brigade Commanders, Training Commander and Special Operations Command.

Duties of a PTI

  • Plan and conduct physical training instructional sessions.
  • Provide individual and group physical training programs.
  • Provide initial management of sports injuries.
  • Conduct physical training assessments.
  • Conduct obstacle course training.
  • Implement and monitor occupational health and safety in the physical training environment.
  • Apply, supervise and manage injury prevention strategies.
  • Promote health and fitness awareness.
  • Officiate, coach and coordinate sporting competitions.
  • Provide advice to the CO on PT, injury prevention, rehabilitation and Military Self Defence.
  • Instruct and supervise Military Self Defence.
  • Instruct on Combat Fitness Leaders Courses.
  • Rehabilitation of soldiers.
  • Education on Health and fitness.

Employment Training

Prior to being panelled on the ADF PTI ITT Cse, a soldier must complete the following:

  • Successfully completed the Combat Fitness Leaders Course (CFLC) and obtained from the course manager a recommendation to be nominated for the ADF PTI ITT Cse.
  • complete a minimum time of 36 months in the ARA.
  • complete Junior Leaders Course.
  • meet the PULHEEMS requirements for ECN 185-0.

The CFLC is four weeks in duration and is designed to prepare you to conduct PT within your unit. The CFLC is a unit's needs course. For details on conducting a CFLC, contact the WO2 or SGT PTI in your area.

On completion of the CFLC, those who perform well enough and are deemed suitable for further training will be recommended to attend the ADF PTI ITT course.

The ADF PTI course is 22 weeks in duration for Army and on completion you will be promoted to CPL and posted to a PTI position as an ECN 185. After a minimum of 12 months in the trade the soldier will be further trained in fitness and recreational management and complete the PTI Supervisor course. After a minimum 36 months and completing the relevant promotion courses you will become eligible for promotion to Sergeant PTI Supervisor.

After a minimum of 4 years and after completing the relevant promotion courses you will be eligible for promotion and appointment as a WO2 PTI Manager.


Employment Location

PTIs are employed in Training Command and Land Command of most major centres throughout Australia. Locations include Townsville, Brisbane, Oakey, Canungra, Sydney, Kapooka, Holsworthy, Singleton, Puckapunyal, Melbourne, HMAS Cerberus, Adelaide, Perth, Darwin, and Canberra.


Pay

  • This particular job is classified as a Pay Group 3 for the CPL PTI.
  • Pay Group 4 for SGT PTI Supervisor and WO2 PTI Manager

Civil Accreditation

This category's courses meet the requirements for both civilian and military authorities and will make you eligible for:

  • Cert III in Fitness (SRF30204) in Gym and aquatic specialisation at the completion of the PTI course.
  • Cert IV in Fitness (SRF40204) in Personal Training at the completion of the PTI course.
  • SOA towards Diploma of Fitness (SRF050103) 6 stream competency units achieved at the completion of the PTI course.
