An electrician is a RAE soldier responsible for performing advanced electrical and general building tasks associated with construction, repair and maintenance of vertical and horizontal structures, and the provision of engineering services, including field power generation, refrigeration and reticulation.
Duties
- Install, inspect, test, maintain, repair and modify powerhouses, reticulation systems, and internal electrical installations.
- Install, inspect, maintain and operate electrical generators.
- Carry out 'user maintenance' of equipment.
Educational Requirement
Completion of Australian Year 10 education (or equivalent) with passes in English, Mathematics and Science (with a Physics content) and one other subject.
Note: Consumer Math's, General Math's, Math's in Society and similarly 'modified' Math's subjects are not suitable for entry to the Technical and Trade Scheme.
Employment Training
Modules 1,2 and 4 of the Combat Engineer IET course: 12 weeks
You will then undertake an 18 month Electricians course at the Army Logistic Training Centre (ALTC) at Bonegilla (near Albury/Wodonga), Victoria. This is followed by a period of up to 36 months of On the Job Experience (OJE) at the School of Military Engineering (SME), Moorebank, Sydney. This will consist of training provided by civil contractors and detachments to Land Command units for OJE tasks as required. Trainees are taught skills in the installation, maintenance and repair of high voltage distribution systems and refrigeration equipment.
Employment Location
Electricians are mainly employed in Construction Squadrons and Combat Engineer Regiments. They are located at Brisbane, Sydney, Townsville and Darwin.
Pay
This particular job is classified as a Pay Group 4 occupation on completion of full trade qualifications.
Further Training
Army electricians are required to undertake further military and technical courses during their initial engagement. These include both promotion and trade related courses.

Special Requirements
Trainees are also required to sit the State Electricity Commission (SEC) of Victoria Licensed Electrical Mechanics examination. On completion of training an application can be made to SEC of Victoria for an Electrical Mechanics Licence which is recognised in all states of Australia.
Civil Accreditation
The Electrician trade course meets the requirements for both civilian and military authorities and upon completion of the course trainees are eligible for an ALTC Certificate of Completion, Certificate III in Electrical and a Certificate in Engineering (refrigeration), both issued by the State Training Board of Victoria. Other civil accreditation includes:
- Certificate IV in Construction Site Supervision is granted to personnel on being assessed as competent as an ARA Corporal.
- Diploma of Construction Works Supervision is granted to personnel on being assessed as competent as an ARA Sergeant.
- Advanced Diploma of Construction Works Management is granted to personnel on being assessed as competent as an ARA Warrant Officer.
