ELIGIBILITY

  • Must be a serving ARA/ARES soldier

ENTRY CRITERIA

Age:

  • 17 to 45.5 years of age, older candidates can not be accepted due to economic constraints

Education:

  • Passes in Year 12 English & Maths (NSW Level 2 or QLD Maths B equivalent; Social Maths not acceptable)
  • Passes in 2 other academic subjects
  • Physics is desirable but not essential
  • A pass in Year 10 Science

Physical:

  • Good hearing & eyesight
  • AIRN compliant
  • Completed an aircrew medical (AVMED approved PM532)
  • Not of abnormal build (Max Height 193cm, Max Height sitting 100cm, Max Length Buttocks to Heel 122cm and Max length Buttocks to Knee 67cm), Min height 163cm, IAW ADFP 1.2.1.1 Chap 7
  • Assessed as Psych suitable for pilot training
  • Glasses may be acceptable for minor vision correction

Avenues of Entry

DIRECT ENTRY - General Service Officer

  • "Career officer", able to compete for promotion to the highest rank in due course
  • 3 years training at the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) and 12 months at the Royal Military College-Duntroon RMC-D, or 18 months training at RMC-D,
  • Competes with other GSO for allocation to AAAvn while at RMC-D

NOTE: Selection for AAAvn at RMC-D is highly competitive, applicants must be aware that they will be allocated to other corps if they are not successful in gaining selection as pilot during the selection process

DIRECT ENTRY - General Service Officer (GSO Avn Cadetship)

  • "Career officer", able to compete for promotion to the highest rank in due course
  • 3 years training at the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) and 12 months at RMC-D, or 18 months training at the RMC-D
  • Pre-selected for pilot training prior to commencing ADFA/RMC

DIRECT ENTRY - Specialist Service Officer (SSO Pilot)- Pilot

  • "Career aviator", likely to be limited to rank of Major
  • 6 weeks training at Royal Military College (RMC), Duntroon
  • Pre-selected for pilot training prior to commencing RMC Army Specialist Service Officer Pilot Scheme (Defweb Only)

Section 1, 2.(Appointment Specialisation) - Detail your preferred entry (eg. SSO Pilot, or GSO Pilot)
A HANDWRITTEN statement addressing the following selection criteria:

  • why you want to be a military pilot,
  • why you believe you would make a good pilot,
  • how you are able to demonstrate motivation towards becoming a pilot. (This can be written in the 'Additional Comments' section on page 4 of the form),
  • your two most recent PAR and/or platoon commander notebook reports (if you have been reported on),
  • relevant extracts of your flying log book, (if you have previous flying experience),
  • transcripts of any tertiary qualifications held; and
  • any other documentation that supports your case, (eg course reports, commendations).

Enclose the following with your application:

  • a copy of your HSC/Year 12 Board of Studies transcript (must detail subject results),
  • Pilot Log Book if (if you have one)
  • Application by Serving Member for Appointment as an Officer
  • Aircrew Selection Preference Form
  • Psych Report
  • Copy of your AVMED approved PM532 Aircrew Medical (mandatory) AIRCREW SELECTION PREFERENCE FORM
