Land Warfare Studies Centre

The Land Warfare Studies Centre (LWSC) is the Army's principal conceptual research institution, and undertakes a wide variety of academic research into the many and varied aspects of 'land warfare'.

Our Charter
The charter of the Land Warfare Studies Centre is to:

  • Promote the wider understanding and appreciation of land warfare
  • Provide an institutional focus for applied research into the study of land warfare
  • Raise the level of professional and intellectual debate within the Australian Army

In order to fulfil its Charter, the LWSC pursues a number of different programs.

Promote the wider understanding and appreciation of land warfare

The LWSC achieves the promotion of a wider understanding and appreciation of land warfare primarily through its events program. Each year, the LWSC holds a number of events that seek to engage relevant Defence Force personnel, policy makers, politicians, academics and industry leaders in debate about the current issues of importance regarding land warfare.

The Centre also promotes a wider understanding and appreciation of land warfare through the out-posting of several of its Military Fellows to various institutions. These Fellows raise awareness of the Army's current thinking on land warfare in the wider defence and security community, as well as studying the many new concepts of relevance to land warfare that are currently being debated in the academy, the private sector and government.

Provide an institutional focus for applied research into the study of land warfare

The LWSC contributes to the Australian Army through its research and publications programs. The LWSC has researched and published on many different land warfare topics across its four separate publications series. By producing these various publications series, the LWSC now forms Army's primary institutional focus for the conduct of rigorous and qualified debate on matters of land warfare.

Raise the level of professional and intellectual debate within the Australian Army

The LWSC contributes centrally to the endurance of the profession of arms in Australia through the facilitation of a constant and varied professional debate. This debate enables the Army to maintain, adapt and grow the specialist corpus of land warfighting knowledge that it holds in trust for the service of Australia and its interests. This debate is largely enabled and developed by the LWSC's various publication series, of which the Australian Army Journal is the centrepiece.
