LWSC Charter

The charter of the Land Warfare Studies Centre is to:

  • Promote the wider understanding and appreciation of land warfare
  • Provide an institutional focus for applied research into the study of land warfare, and
  • Raise the level of professional and intellectual debate within the Australian Army

About Us

The LWSC's research program is primarily aimed at research and analysis of longer-term issues and conceptual development beyond the usual frame of reference of normal staff, doctrine and capability development processes. The general focus of the Centre is exploring the changing character of war, both in its historical context and how such changes will have an impact on the Army of the future. With many longer-term issues, the emphasis is on conceptual rather than empirical research. Greater emphasis is also placed on the importance of land warfare concepts and capabilities within joint and combined contexts.

In our applied research, we are tasked through Army Headquarters. Major tasks require approval by the Chief of Army (CA) or Deputy Chief of Army (DCA). Routine tasks are approved by the Commander Land Warfare Development Centre (COMDLWDC).

Collectively, the LWSC research staff's areas of interest cover a broad spectrum of topics relevant to the Army today and in the future.
