To
be a member of the Sniper Platoon you must first complete your
Rifleman training and be selected to become a Sniper. The Sniper
is a Rifleman (infantryman) selected for his highly developed
fieldcraft, marksman and observation skill. The sniper works as
part of a two-man team. He is employed either as a shooter or
observer spotter, and may alternate between these roles. The sniper
team is an important link in the intelligence gathering chain.
The Sniper is able to locate and report on enemy movements and
dispositions. He is able to stalk or wait unseen to engage and
kill, with one shot, selected personnel or equipment targets at
ranges up to 1,500m. A sniper may be employed in counter-sniper
tasks. The snipers' skill is of immense value in war due to the
destructive effect upon enemy morale and operations of his actions.
After
you have completed Common Recruit Training (CRT) at Kapooka in
New South Wales, you will be ready to start your Initial Employment
Training (or IET as we call it). The infantry IET course is three
2-week courses with on the job training. After completion of your
Infantry courses, provided you are selected, you may attend a
Basic Sniper Course which is conducted in ARA Infantry Battalions
or at the Shool of Infantry for a duration 20 days. Following
on from this, and if selected, you may attend a Team Leader Sniper
Course which is conducted at the School of Infantry for a duration
of 25 days. All your travel, accommodation and meals are free.

As a sniper, you will gain and develop a wide range of fieldcraft, marksmanship and personal skills and gain experience that will be invaluable in any career you choose. You will develop skills in personnel management, communications, teamwork and leadership. You will enhance your personal organisation and learn the ability to problem solve.
More importantly, will these qualifications under your belt, you will gain considerable confidence in your own ability and develop your teamwork skills. As an infantryman in the Sniper Platoon, you know you can get the job done regardless of the challenges.
