The
JobAs a Recovery Mechanic you will be part of the Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers or RAEME. A Recovery Mechanic is employed wide range of tasks, including the recovery of damaged vehicles and equipment, and the operation and maintenance of recovery vehicles and equipment. Prior to working as a Recovery Mechanic, you will undergo basic driver training and heavy rigid vehicle training.
However its not all damaged vehicles and equipment, as you will also get the opportunity to learn to shoot the F88 Austeyr and Minimi Light Support Weapon plus participate in unit activitites such as adventurous training and sport.
The
TrainingAfter you have completed six-weeks of Common Recruit Training (CRT) at Kapooka in NSW, you will be ready to start your Basic Drivers course. This consists of a 16-day module followed by a 9-day upgrade, delivered in regions and in unit locations.
Next you will need to complete a 10-day Mack conversion course which will qualify you to dirve the Army's 8 tonne Mack trucks. This course is conducted at the Arly Logistics Training Centre (ALTC) or in your local unit. The Basic Recovery Course itself is conducted on two phases. Phase one consists of 12 months of normal unit training under supervision of a qualified Recovery Mechanic and a 16-day residential course at ALTC. At he completion of Phase One you will be qualified to lift andtow plus undertake other recovery tasks using the Army's Mack Recovery Vehicle and trailer. Phase Two consists of 12 months on-the-job training in your unit location and a further 16-day residential course at ALTC. On completion of these phases, you will be a fully qualified Recovery Mechanic.
The
SkillsRAEME soldiers are known as 'Craftsman' and are responsible for maintaining the Army's vast array of electrical, mechanical and electronic equipment. As a "Crafty" you will gain and develop a wide range of personal skills and experience that will be invaluable to any career that you choose outside of the Army. More importantly, with this trade experience under your belt, you will gain considerable confidence and develop your teamwork skills. This job is all about keeping the Army on the move!
