Infantry Mortarman

The Job

As a member of the Mortar Platoon you provide the indirect fire support to the Infantry Battalion. You are responsible to ensure that your friends in the rifle companies receive the support required to enable the mission to be a success.

You will perform these duties as part of a very close knit team, in diverse situations, in the field in and out of operations. As a Mortarman, you are the man that makes it all happen in a Mortar Platoon.

But that is not all you will do. You will learn to shoot the F88 Austeyr, the F89 Minimi Light Support Weapon, and participate in unit adventurous training.

The Training

After you have completed Common Recruit Training (CRT) at Kapooka, you will be ready to start your Initial Employment Training (or ‘IET’ as we call it). The Infantry IET course is a 2 week course with on the job training. After completion of the Infantry course you will be eligible to commence the Basic Mortar Course.

The Basic Mortar Course is a 2 week course.. The training is conducted at the Combined Arms Training Centre at Puckapunyal in Victoria. This training teaches you all about the Mortar, all its different parts, the drills to operate the Mortar, and how to keep it serviceable. All your travel, accommodation and meals are free. Plus you get TAX FREE pay while your gaining your new skill.

You will learn skills in personnel management communications and leadership. You will enhance your personnel organisation and learn the ability to problem solve.
