The Job

As a Transport Driver, you are involved with driving and maintaining all the military vehicles of the unit; the 110 Landrover, the Mercedes Unimog Truck and the 8 Ton Mack Truck.

You will start on the Landrover, driving a command, reconnaissance or communications vehicle. Once you have developed these skills you can advance to driving the Unimog truck. After the qualifying period you may advance to the Mack Truck.

We will also train you as an infantry rifleman so you can participate fully in live firing exercises, you will learn to shoot the F88 Austeyr Rifle, and train in basic soldier fieldcraft.

The Training

After you have completed Common Recruit Training (CRT) at Kapooka, you will be ready to start your Initial Employment Training (or ‘IET’ as we call it). We will teach you everything you need to be a fully skilled Transport Driver.

The Basic Drivers Course is a 2 week course. The training is either conducted in Albury, New South Wales, at the Army Logistics Training Centre, or here in the unit. All your travel, accommodation and meals are free. Plus you get TAX FREE pay while you are gaining your new skill.

After this course you will have all the basic skills required to operate and maintain the Landrover. Drivers courses for the Unimog and Mack Truck are also 2 weeks.

The Skills

As a Transport Driver you’ll gain and develop a wide range of professional skills and experience that will be invaluable in any career you choose. First, the military licenses you gain allow you to operate civilian equivalent vehicles. You can also obtain qualifications in Transport Management and Road Movement which have accredited civilian recognition.

As well, you will learn skills in personnel management, communications and leadership, while enhancing your personal organisation and ability to problem solve.

Working as a Transport Driver in the Army Reserve will help build your confidence, develop your teamwork skills and help give you that head start up the career ladder.
