COMMAND POST OPERATOR

The Job

Along with learning to be an Artillery Gunner, you can specialise as an Artillery Command Post Operator. In this job you are the technical guru in our artillery units.

At the 'Gun End' you will be involved in reconnoitering the gun position, indicating where guns are sighted and aligning them to fire accurately. You can also operate the gunnery computer that calculates the information transmitted to the guns for them to fire..

At the 'Target End' you will be responsible for engaging the target, primarily with artillery, but also using other assets such as mortars, tanks, aircraft or naval gunfire. You get to control it all!.

The Training

After you have completed Common Recruit Training (CRT) at Kapooka, you will be ready to start your Initial Employment Training (or ‘IET’ as we call it). We will teach you everything you need to be a skilled Artillery Command Post Operator.

Afer you complete your Basic Gun Number Course, you can specialise ias a command post operator. The Operator Command Post course is a two-week course conducted either at Puckapunyal in Victoria, or here in the unit. This training will provide you with the skills you need to work as a Artillery Command Post Operator at the 'Gun End'. From here you can do additional training to give you the skills to work at the 'Target End' .

The Skills

As an Artillery Command Post Operator you will be skilled in operating a wide range of the Army’s sophisticated equipment, including artillery fire control comptures, laser range finders and survey instruments.

The skills you gain here, in addition to the qualifications you get as an Artillery Gunner, will make you a valuable asset within the Army Reserve. With these qualifications under your belt, you will have the experience in personnel communications, leadership and teamwork to give you The Edge in any career you choose.
