Army Chef

The Job

They say an army marches on its stomach, and so as an Army Chef, you are responsible for all the catering requirements of an army unit!

The job is not just about cooking, it also involves; the ordering and receipt of all food stores, the management of army rations, and the planning and control of catering functions such as formal dinners.

You will perform these duties as part of a small catering team, in diverse situations, ranging from large modern catering facilities, to a using a mobile kitchen in the field.

But that is not all you will do. You will learn to shoot the F88 Austeyr Rifle, train in basic fieldcraft, and participate in live firing exercises and adventurous activities such as abseiling.

The Training

 

After you have completed Common Recruit Training (CRT) at Kapooka, you will be ready to start your Initial Employment Training (or ‘IET’ as we call it). We will teach you everything you need to be a fully skilled Army Chef.

The Basic Catering Course is a 2 week course. The training is conducted in Albury, New South Wales, at the Army Logistics Training Centre. All your travel, accommodation and meals are free. Plus you get TAX FREE pay while you are gaining your new skill.

After this course you will have all the skills required to become involved in running a unit kitchen.

The Skills

As an Army Chef you’ll gain and develop a wide range of professional skills and experience that will be invaluable in any career you choose. You will gain superb culinary skills, become qualified in operating industrial kitchen equipment, and planning and managing catering functions and events. All these skills have accredited civilian recognition.

 

You will also learn skills in management, communications and leadership, while enhancing your personal organisation and ability to problem solve.

Working as a Army Chef in the Army Reserve will help build your confidence, develop your teamwork skills and help give you that head start up the career ladder.
