Artillery Gunner

The Job

As an Artillery Gun Number (or 'Gunner').uou will work as part of a seven man gun dtachment on on e of our artillery guns, the 105mm L119 Hamel Gun. You will bring the gun into action, aim the gun, load the 105mm artillery projectile and fire the gun.

It is an important job, making sure that all the drills are carried out correctly, so that when a shell is fired, it hits the target - upto 11 kilometres away!

As a gunner you are the guy that makes it all happen in an artillery unit.

But that is not all you will do. You will learn to shoot the F88 Austeyre Rifle and F89 Minim Machine Gun, train in basic soldier fieldcraft and participate in adventurous training.

The Training

After you have completed Common Recruit training (CRT) at Kapooka in South Western New South Wales, you will be ready to start your Initial Employment Training (or 'IET' as we call it). On these courses we will teach you everything you need to be a fully skilled Gunner.

The Gun Number course is conducted over three 2-week 'modules'. You can do these modules in succession, or one at a time depending on the time you have available. Afer only the first module, you can safely work as part of a gun detachment and fire the gun!

The training is conducted at the Combined Arms Training Centre at Puckapunyal in Victoria, and we also run our own courses here in the unit. This training teaches you all about the L119 Hamel Gun, and its different parts, the drills to operate and fire the gun, and how to keep it serviceable. All your travel, accomodation and meals are free while on training. Plus you get TAX FREE pay while you are gainin these new skills.

The Skills

As a Gunner you will gain and develop a wide range of personal skills and experience that will be invaluable in personnel management, communications and leadership. You will enhance your personal organisation and learn the ability to problem solve.

Working as part of a gun detachment will also help build your confidence, and develop your teamwork skills. As a Gunner, you know you can get the gun done!
