ARTAP

Army Reserve
Traineeship and Apprenticeship Program

Another exciting new avenue of entry is the Army Reserve Traineeship and Apprenticeship Scheme or ARTAP. If you are interested in gaining a civilian trade qualification on a full-time basis with a Civilian Employer or a Group Training Organisation (GTO) and to learn and practice your trade on the job with the Army as a Reservist, then consider this unique scheme that is now available at the 11th Brigade, Lavarack Barracks Townsville.

The way ARTAP works is that you agree to join and remain in the Army Reserve for the period of your apprenticeship. At the same time, you are employed by a Civilian Employer or a GTO, with whom the Army has an established partnership arrangement, to undertake your full-time civilian training.

The process begins with attending an information night by calling 1300 132 624 or email the Recruiting Officer

david.brown@defence.gov.au This is followed by an assessment and an interview by a Civilian Employer or a GTO. You then need to attend an assessment (YOU day) covering an aptitude test, Medical, and both Psychological and Defence Interviews. Once you have completed and passed all of the above along with a Pre- fitness test you will be enlisted.

You then commence your Common Recruit Training (CRT) at the Army Recruit Training Centre (ARTC) near Wagga Wagga in New South Wales. ARTC is the home of recruit training and is where all soldiers, regular and reserve, commence their career in the Army. The course is 28 days in duration and during this time; you'll receive expert training from some of the Army's best instructors. No one is saying this training will be easy, but when you complete it, you'll be proud of what you've accomplished.

After recruit training, you'll walk away with around $1800.00 tax-free, regardless of any other income or benefits you may be receiving. What a great deposit on a motor vehicle.

You are now ready to commence your apprenticeship / traineeship. You will be paid the award wage and other entitlements while you work with your civilian employer depending on the trade qualification you are completing. The Civilian Employer or the GTO is responsible for your trade training and will arrange your technical training at TAFE. Your Army unit will be a host employer and in addition you will need to attend one night parade each week, one weekend each month and a continuous 14-day camp while being paid tax-free pay as a Reservist. If required, make-up pay will be made by the Civilian Employer or the GTO to ensure that you receive at least the standard trainee award wages.

Because of the Australian Government's new Reserve enhancement initiatives there are other benefits available to reservists. For more information on these changes, check out the Australian Defence Force Reserves web site at
