Operator Catering (Steward)



The Operator Catering is a soldier trained to perform food, liquor and beverage service and the preparation of light meals. They are also trained to maintain bar, dining room and kitchen equipment, in both barrack and field environments.



Duties


As a PTE, the Operator Catering's main job function is to maintain and provide food and beverage services in barracks and in the field. As a LCPL/CPL, the Operator Catering's main job function is as for PTE, however at JNCO management level, and in addition, plan and coordinate Mess functions and events, conduct on-the-job training and perform bar and messing accounting procedures in accordance with the NPMA and guidance given by the Mess Committee.


Employment Training

ADF Initial Steward Course: 8 weeks
Army Initial Operator Catering Course: 2 weeks

Recruit Training is followed by an eight week Initial Steward's Course at the ADF School of Catering (ADFSC), HMAS CERBERUS, Western Port Victoria. The course includes bar, dining room and reception duties. There is a further two weeks field catering training at the Field Catering Detachment Latchford Barracks, Bonegilla Victoria.


Employment Location

Operator Catering's (Stewards) are employed in most capital cities as well as the major military establishments in locations such as Townsville, Perth, Darwin, Sydney, Brisbane.

  • Steward 363-1, 363-2 and 363-3 Pay Group 1

  • Steward 363-4 and 363-5 Pay Group 2





Civil Accreditation

This category's courses meet the requirements for both civilian and military authorities and will make you eligible for:

  • Certificate II in Hospitality (Operations) is granted to Private solders upon successful completion of the ADF Initial Stewards Course.
  • Certificate III in Hospitality (Operations) is granted after successful completion of the Competency and Workplace Proficiency Task Book (CWPTB).
  • Certificate IV in Hospitality (Supervision) is granted on being assessed as a competent ARA Corporal.
  • Certificate of Attainment towards a Diploma of Hospitality Management is granted on being assessed as a competent ARA Sergeant.
