Gun Number




The Gun Number (Artillery) soldier is part of the Royal Regiment of Australian Artillery (RAA) Open in new window which provides firepower on the battlefield.

The field branch of RAA is equipped with the Australian-made Hamel 105mm L119 Howitzer and the US-made 155mm M198 Howitzer.

A Gun Number is a soldier who operates the guns of field and medium artillery units.



Duties

  • Assists in bringing the gun into and out of action.
  • Assists in the preparation and storage of ammunition.
  • Loads the gun.
  • Fires the gun.
  • Applies data to the sighting systems to direct the gun at the target.
  • Assists in gun servicing and maintenance.
  • Assists in the preparation of the gun for movement by land, sea and air.
  • Assists in the local defence.
  • Carries out the duties of an artillery communicator in Command posts and Joint offensive support teams.

Employment Training

Gun Number Course: 3 Weeks at the School of Artillery, Puckapunyal, VIC, which will include gun, signals and field training. You will then be posted to a Field or Medium Regiment where you will undergo a minimum of 12 months on the job experience (OJE). You will also be required to undertake specialist signals training, after which you may decide to remain a gun number or undertake further training as an operator command post.


Employment Location

The Gun Number is employed in Field and Medium Regiments throughout Australia with major units located in Brisbane, Townsville and Darwin. Gunners are often deployed as peacekeepers to overseas areas of conflict in support of the UN.


Pay

This particular job is classified as a Pay Group 2 occupation, with progression to Pay group 3 when you have completed the 12 month OJE, and attended an Advanced Gunners course or a command post operator course.

Civil Accreditation

This category's courses meet the requirements for both civilian and military authorities and will make you eligible for:

  • Certificate II in Government PSP20104 is granted on being assessed as competent as an ARA Gunner and categorisation of Gunner Grade 3 or Operator Command Post Grade 2.
  • Certificate III in Artillery Operations 80889ACT is granted to personnel on being assessed as competent as an ARA Bombardier and categorisation of Gun Detachment Commander or Operator Command Post Offensive Support Grade 3.
  • Certificate III in Government PSP30104 is granted to personnel on being assessed as competent as an ARA Bombardier and categorisation of Gun Detachment Commander or Operator Command Post Offensive Support Grade 3.
  • Certificate III in Business (Frontline Management) BSB30501 is granted to personnel on being assessed as competent as an ARA Bombardier and categorisation of Gun Detachment Commander or Operator Command Post Offensive Support Grade 3.
  • Statement of Attainment towards Certificate IV in Government PSP40198 is granted to personnel on being assessed as competent as an ARA Sergeant and categorisation of Supervisor Offensive Support.
  • Certificate IV in Resource Supervision is granted to personnel on being assessed as competent as an ARA Sergeant and categorisation of Supervisor Offensive Support.
  • Diploma of Government PSP50199 is granted to personnel on being assessed as competent as a ARA Warrant Officer and categorisation of Manager Operations Offensive Support.
  • Diploma of Resource Management is granted to personnel on being assessed as competent as a ARA Warrant Officer and categorisation of Manager Operations Offensive Support.
