Ground Crewman Mission Support

The Groundcrewman Mission Support is an Australian Army Aviation (AAAvn) soldier who is employed in the establishment, maintenance and technical control of command, control and communications equipment and facilities in support of Army Aviation aircraft operations.


Duties

A Groundcrewman Mission Support may be employed within AAAvn and Army units in a wide variety of operational tasks or training duties:

  • Utility operations (MRH-90)
  • Airmobile operations (S70A-9 Blackhawk)
  • Medium lift operations (CH47D Chinook)
  • Special operations (S70A-9 Blackhawk)
  • Reconnaissance operations (B206 Kiowa, ARH Tiger)
  • Training operations (AAvnTC, ARTC, RMC-D, ADFA)
  • Non-corps operations (JEWOSU) and
  • Selected Defence Recruiting positions around Australia.

Prerequisites

On completion of common recruit training, the Groundcrewman Mission Support Command Post Operator is to complete the IET Driver Basic Course conducted by Army Logistics Training Centre (ALTC), Bandiana. The course provides soldiers with an unrestricted military driving license for the Land rover and the Unimog and includes Dangerous Goods, Night Fighting Equipment and Operations.


Initial Employment Training

On completion of driver training, the soldier will be panelled to attend the Groundcrewman Mission Support Command Post Operator Course conducted at the School of Army Aviation (SAA) at Oakey. The course qualifies trainees on establishment and maintenance of an aviation command post and operating technical systems. The following courses are also completed during the conduct of the Command Post Operator Course:

  • Basic Combat Communicator Course. This course is exported from the Combined Arms Training Centre (CATC), Puckapunyal. Soldiers are trained in the operation and maintenance of basic radio equipment including, Radio Telephone (RATEL) procedures the use of operations and numeral codes and secure voice operations for man pack radios;
  • Specialist Combat Communicator Course. This course is exported from the CATC, Puckapunyal. Soldiers are trained in specialist communications including the setup and maintenance of vehicle mounted radio systems within Fitted For Radios (FFR) vehicles, advanced RATEL procedures, the operation and maintenance of ancillary equipment including retransmission stations and radio remoting equipment, and advanced secure voice training utilising secure voice equipment;
  • Battlefield Command Support System (BCSS) Modules. These courses is delivered by Aviation Trade Wing (ATW), SAA. Soldiers are trained in the setup, operation and maintenance of BCSS; and
  • Basic Field Power Generation Course. This course is exported from the School of Military Engineering (SME), Holsworthy. Soldiers are trained in the operation and maintenance of portable and static electrical generators.

These courses are conducted at the Army Aviation Training Centre, Oakey. The overall course length is 7 months duration, including ARTC and prerequisite driver training.


Return of Service Obligation

Soldiers conducting training under an Initial Minimum Period of Service (IMPS) do not incur an additional ROSO. Personnel transferring from other employment categories or services will incur a ROSO in accordance with DI(G) PERS 33-2 Return of Service Obligation equal to the length of course in training days plus one year.


Career Progression

The career progression for Groundcrewman is based on the requirement to achieve competency in a range of unit and military skills. In addition to experience gained within units, Groundcrewman can be expected to complete some or all of the following courses over the period of their career.

  • Advanced Combat Communicator course (CPL);
  • Defence Cryptographic Custodian course (CPL);
  • Supervisor Aviation Squadron Operations course (SGT);
  • Unit Safety Coordinator course (SGT);
  • Aviation Manager course (WO2);
  • TAA Cert IV (CPL/SGT);
  • RAAF Electronic Warfare Course (selected pers);
  • Quality Systems Auditor course (WO2); and
  • Various rank employment category and military promotion courses.

Regimental Employment

Employment/progression to WO1 rank is by selection only. Selection is based on reported merit/performance in trade and recommended suitability to be employed as an Aviation Squadron Sergeant Major (Avn SSM), Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM). Courses required for subsequent employment are as follows:

  • Quality Systems Auditor course,
  • Aviation SSM course,
  • Aviation Manager course, and
  • RSM course.

Groundcrewman are employed in the following AAAvn and ADF units:

  • in Oakey,
  • in Sydney,
  • in Darwin,
  • in Townsville,
  • DACI-A in Townsville and Canberra,
  • Selected training establishments around Australia, and
  • Selected DFR postings around Australia.
