Driver Transport

A driver is a soldier who operates and manages Defence vehicles in combat, combat support and combat service support roles, by day and by night, on all forms of roads (including off road) as required, carrying a variety of loads including cargo, personnel and dangerous goods (DG).


A DVR is required to load, drive and maintain a vehicle and its associated equipment with a payload up to and including 12 tonnes (20 tonnes with trailer). The driver may be employed to drive a variety of specialist vehicles including Truck Tanker Water and Truck Tanker Fuel.


Duties

  • Drive loaded and unloaded vehicles under all conditions, by day and by night, on formed roads and cross-country.
  • Camouflage a vehicle.
  • Operate Mechanical Handling Equipment, as necessary.
  • Operate all ancillary equipment fitted to a vehicle (eg. vehicle mounted crane).
  • Supervise and assist with the loading and unloading of vehicles.
  • Conduct non-technical inspections and operator servicing of a vehicle and or assist tradesmen with the repair of that vehicle when required.
  • Recover ditched and damaged vehicles using vehicle recovery equipment.
  • Operate radio/communications equipment if fitted to a vehicle.
  • Perform the function of Assistant Driving Instructor after a qualifying period of 12 months.
  • Transport dangerous goods and Commonwealth explosives in accordance with the regulations and legislation.
  • Maintain transport documentation.
  • Convey VIPs up to one star rank.
  • Navigate in built up areas and in the field using civil maps, military maps and / or route cards and GPS.
  • Operate a military vehicle on public roads in accordance with both military and civilian legislation.
  • Operate in an environment of threat.

Employment Training

Basic Driver Training Course: 42 Days at the Army Logistic Training Centre, Road Transport Wing , Puckapunyal, Victoria.


Employment Location

Most units of the Army, Australia wide, require transport drivers.


Pay

The pay levels for this employment are:

  • Driver (Part Time Only) PTE Pay Group 1.
  • Driver Grade 1 PTE Pay Group 2.
  • Driver Grade 2 PTE-LCPL Pay Group 3.
  • Supervisor Transport Section Operations PTE-CPL Pay Group 3.

Civil Accreditation


This category's courses meet the requirements for both civilian and military authorities and will make you eligible for:

  • Certificate III in Transport and Distribution (Road Transport) is granted to personnel on being assessed as competent as an ARA PTE-CPL.
  • Statement of Attainment towards the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment is granted to personnel on being assessed as competent as an ARA CPL-SGT.
  • Certificate IV in Transport and Distribution (Road Transport) is granted to personnel on being assessed as competent as an ARA SGT.
  • Diploma in Logistics Management is granted to personnel on being assessed as competent as an ARA WO2 .
