Carpenter

A carpenter is a RAE soldier responsible for performing advanced carpentry and general building tasks associated with construction, repair and maintenance of vertical and horizontal structures.


Duties

  • Erects timber frames and lays floors.
  • Erects formwork.
  • Installs doors and windows.
  • Carries out joinery tasks.
  • Lays and places concrete.
  • Erects scaffolding (up to 4 metres in height).
  • Sets out vertical construction tasks.
  • Erects roofing.
  • Reads plans and specifications.

Employment Training

Modules 1,2 and 4 of the Combat Engineer IET: 12 weeks
You will then undertake a 12 - 15 month Carpenters Course at the Army Logistic Training Centre at Bonegilla (near Albury/Wodonga), Victoria. This is followed by a period of up to 32 months of On-the-Job experience at the School of Military Engineering (SME), Moorebank, Sydney, NSW. This will consist of training provided by civil contractors and detachment to Land Command units for OJE tasks as required. Trainees are taught skills in Housing (sub-floor, framework, roofing and timber finishing); Industrial (formwork, scaffolding, setting out and concreting) and Joinery (doors, windows, and basic stairs).


Employment Location

Carpenters are mainly employed in Construction Squadrons and Combat Engineer Regiments. They are located at Brisbane, Sydney, Townsville and Darwin.


Pay

This particular job is classified as a Pay Group 4 occupation on completion of full trade qualifications.


Further Training

Army carpenters are required to undertake further military and technical courses during their initial engagement. These include both promotion and trade related courses.


Civil Accreditation

Completion of your trade training as a Carpenter satisfies the requirements for a Trade Certificate of Completion issued by the State Training Board of Victoria through the Army Logistic Training Centre. Other civil accreditation includes:

  • Certificate IV in Construction Site Supervision is granted to personnel on being assessed as competent as an ARA Corporal.
  • Diploma of Construction Works Supervision is granted to personnel on being assessed as competent as an ARA Sergeant.
  • Advanced Diploma of Construction Works Management is granted to personnel on being assessed as competent as an ARA Warrant Officer.
