CO's Perspective

Welcome to the SCMA Web Page. My name is COL Andrew Gallaway and this is my first year as CO SCMA, however I have had previous experience in CMA and I am looking forward to working in Career Management again. Contemporary career management advocates that the best outcome will be achieved when individuals have increased involvement in career management decisions. To have greater involvement in their career management, individuals must be better informed about job and promotion opportunities and how career management decisions are made. Career management is a three way process, between a soldier, their chain of command, and their CMA. Individuals must be actively engaged in their own career management to be successful and the channels of communication need to be effective at all times

Throughout 2010, I intend to pursue a number of initiatives to keep up with changing demands of the Army workforce and continuing evolution of career management to balance service needs with individual expectations. We know from recent surveys that some of the drivers of dissatisfaction are: geographic instability; insufficient warning of postings; sub-optimal career structures or paths and poor access to career managers. All of these areas are being addressed and SCMA will continue to inform and evaluate enhanced career options for soldiers throughout the year. It is interesting to note that due to the various initiatives and changes made to the ADF pay structure we have been so successful that Army is now basically full. However, we still have some way to go to get the workforce balance right, by rank and employment category. What this means is that options that were available in 2009 may not be available in 2010, in particular CFTS, FPS and some lateral transfer options. However, these issues are not insurmountable and if we maintain our partnership and communicate effectively we will be able to achieve an effective outcome for the soldier on most occasions.
Lastly, I would highly recommend a visit to SCMA if you have the opportunity. The relationship between the unit chain of command and the career managers is a most important one for your soldiers' sake and personal contact is an excellent way to build our rapport. On that note, my door is always open to visiting command teams, so please don't hesitate to call in and gidday
