In today's Army, you can choose either to work full-time or part-time. It all depends on what you would like to do. If you prefer full-time work then you should consider joining the Full-time Army, but if you're after part-time work there's the Army Reserve.
Whether you choose full-time or part-time work, you'll become part of one of the largest and most professional organisations in Australia. An organisation with a strong team spirit, and one that offers you a very high standard of training and an opportunity to work with the latest technology.
The Army Reserve has always been about challenge and reward. As a member of the Army Reserve, you'll gain new skills and experiences as well as improving your overall level of fitness. The best part is, while all this is happening, you'll receive tax-free pay. This means you'll have the cash to do whatever you want, whether it's study, work or securing a new job.
The Army Reserve has long been a part of Australia's proud military tradition, a tradition of determination, honour and courage. For years, part-time soldiers have played a vital role in protecting the security of Australia. On the battlefields of Gallipoli, Kokoda, Korea and Vietnam, the Australian Army has forged a reputation of being a strong, well-trained and dedicated team. It is a reputation you'll be expected to uphold as we face the challenges of the 21st century.
The Army is made up of specialised branches called Corps such as the Infantry, Artillery, Armoured, Engineers, Signals and Ordinance Corps. Within each Corps there are a variety of jobs or trades available. Before you join the Army Reserve, you should find out what jobs are available in your local area and choose the one that appeals to you most (Click on the 8 Brigade Units link on the left to locate your nearest unit). Most jobs are open to both men and women, however current Defence Force policy doesn't allow women to take up some combat roles.
If you already
have civilian qualifications there may be a role
for you to join the Army Reserve. Army Reserve units have positions
available for people who are qualified in the following areas
- Legal, Medical, Dental, Psychology, Public Relations, Accounting,
Pharmacy and Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.
Joining the Army Reserve to practice your current skills will allow you to practice these skills in new and challenging areas. From the opportunity to undertake overseas deployments to providing aid to the Civilian Community during times of natural disaster, your time in the Army Reserve will be far from normal.
If you join as a Direct Entry Officer (DEO) you will only need to complete an abridged 2 week recruit course before commencing your employment in an Army Reserve Unit. This course will teach you all the basic military skills, traditions and other requirements you will need for your service in the Army Reserve.
For more information on the jobs that are available in the Brigade, see Direct Entry Jobs listed below.
To join the Army Reserve, you need to be fit and meet certain requirement for enlistment (see Conditions of Service). Prior to your enlistment, you must pass also pass a fitness assessment called the Personal Fitness Assessment (PFA). This is a combination of push-ups, sit ups and a "shuttle run". To find out more on the standards required click on Fitness Requirements.
|
After completing your enlistment, you can parade with your unit for up to 20 days before a the next recruit course commences. This gives you an opportunity to experience Army Reserve life and pick up some tricks and tips from those who've completed training before commencing your initial training.
Your initial Army training begins with Common Recruit Training (CRT) at the Army Recruit Training Centre (ARTC) Kapooka, near Wagga in Southern New South Wales. ARTC is the home of recruit training and is where all soldiers, Regular or Reserve, commence their career in the Army. During the course, you'll receive expert training from some of the Army's best instructors. No one is saying this training will be easy, but when you complete it, you'll be proud of what you've accomplished.
Where possible, CRT will be arranged to fit in with any other commitments you may have. If you're studying or just finished school, then this is a great way to develop new skills and earn cash. You have a choice of doing your CRT either on a continuous or non-continuous basis. The continuous recruit course comprises 45 days of continuous training, while the non-continuous course can be completed in two modules. Module One can be anything from two to five weeks in duration with Module Two making up the remaining elements of the seven-week course.
After recruit training, you'll walk away with around $2,000 tax-free, regardless of any other income or benefits you may be receiving. For more information on what you'll receive during and after recruit course, see the Pay and Allowances page.
