Frequently Asked Questions
APA-D is frequently asked a number of similar questions. Here is a list of their most frequently asked questions along with short answers. Where possible, links to current supporting policy have been included. Need to know more - then please contact us.
How can I contact my Career Manager?
Members should use the chain of command to obtain access to their Career Managers at APA-D. For a full list of APA-D staff and their contact details visit the Functional Directory page but remember some APA-D staff are reservists and may not be contactable via APA-D office phones other than on Tuesday nights.
How do I know what courses are available in the Army?
In the old days Training Command used to issue a document called TCI OPs to units. Nowadays all this information is on the DEFWEB at a site called ARMYTIMS. Follow the links to view the course you wish to undertake, you can even see the panel size and when nominations are required. Course nominations are submitted and processed through your chain of command.
How do I apply for courses?
Members who are interested in applying for courses may request information regarding the availability and criteria of any course. This information may be accessed by unit orderly rooms via ARMYTIMS. A member who wishes to nominate for a particular course should contact their orderly room who, if the criteria for the course is met, will submit an application to the relevant paneling authority.
When can I expect promotion?
Promotion for members is very much dependent on merit of the member and vacancies in the region. Career managers within the APA regularly look at member's personal history and performance appraisals in determining a priority list for personnel ready for promotion. Generally members should have spent 36 months in their current rank before being considered for promotion to the next level. All members may contact their Career Managers at APA-D on Tuesday nights for further information.
I don't have time for the Reserves right now, but would like to serve again in the foreseeable future?
Members who for personal/work reasons can no longer commit themselves to the GRes, but would like to return to service in the foreseeable future may transfer to the Standby Reserves (IAAR). Applications are submitted through unit orderly rooms and forwarded to APA-D for determination. Each application is checked to see if the member meets the criteria for transfer to the IAAR, generally members should be AIRN compliant or be able to present strong evidence as to why they should be considered for transfer to the IAAR despite being non-compliant. Transfer to IAAR is not an option for those serving personnel who do not hold a trade.
I'm leaving the Northern Region - What should I do?
All members who are leaving the region have a responsibility to report this up through their chain of command to the unit orderly room. If the member concerned still wishes to serve with the GRes in the new region they are to contact their unit's orderly room and inform them of their new address once they have arrived in the new locality. Members may contact the APA of the new region to ascertain vacancies available. An application for reposting may be submitted vide their new unit, which will be recommended by both the new and old units prior to forwarding to the APA of the new region. For members who do not wish to serve any longer, they are to notify their unit who will administer their discharge. If a member wishes to be placed on the standby list and meet the criteria for transfer to the standby list, they are to notify their unit who will administer the required staff action.
