Equipment Employed by the Regiment

The 7th Field Regiment employs a vast range of equipment specific to artillery. The use of equipment such as our field guns, gunnery computers, GPS, radios, vehicles, and survey equipment means that all gunners get the choice to learn a broad range of skills that can be quite technical in nature.

L119 105mm HOWITZER

The L119 105mm Field Gun is in service with most Reserve Artillery Regiments. It is a light weight, unarmoured, towed, low profile gun/howitzer. It is able to provide direct or indirect fire support in that it can engage targets both within and outside visual range. It may be towed by a Gun Tractor (usually a Mercedes Unimog) in two configurations being: the 'A' Frame for emergency moves and the folded position for much longer and deliberate moves. It can be air dropped by parachute or carried by helicopter.

It is crewed by 7 soldiers and has a range of over 11 kilometres.

Ammunition types include:

  • High explosive (HE)
  • Smoke
  • Illuminating

MERCEDES BENZ UNIMOG

The Unimog truck is powered by a Mercedes-Benz 5.675 litre six-cylinder, direct injected turbocharged diesel engine. It has an eight-speed manual transmission and rear and front axle drives enabling 4x4. The cab allows for driver and up to two passengers.

The primary role of the vehicle is to transport the L119 Howitzer and ammunition.

Due to their renowned off road capabilites, similir Unimog vehicles have been regular participants in the Dakar Rally.

LAND ROVER 110

The LR 110 is powered by an Isuzu 3.9 litre naturally aspirated diesel engine developing 98 hp at 3,000 rpm. It is 4 x 4 capable. The vehicle incorporates a main transmission and integral transfer case, with gearing designed to enable the vehicle to negotiate any terrain or gradient that will allow wheel traction.

Major improvements have been made with this model in terms of higher levels of interior comfort and visibility, better manoeuvrability and performance, stronger chassis and better steering and suspension.

The LR 110 provides on and off road mobility for personnel and limited stores.
