Management of Young Children Program

What is M.Y.C.P.?

The Management of Young Children Program is an individual parenting skills training and support program for parents of children with difficult behaviours.

M.Y.C.P. is a practical approach and is aimed at restoring a parent-child relationship which has become "at risk" because the child has taken control through oppositional behaviour.

The central premise of the program is that the parent, with some support, is able to master skills in child management, which will restore a loving relationship.

Who will benefit?

  • Young children aged between 2 1/2 to 6 years who interpret a parental request as a stimulus for defiant behaviour - saying "NO", ignoring the request, temper tantrums, etc.
  • Young children who appear to require parental attention to an extensive degree.
  • Children with developmental delays or learning difficulties.

How do Parents make contact?

M.Y.C.P.
Phone Glenda Gray, Coordinating Administrator on 04 4053 1394 on week days so that an initial interview can be organised.

What would be the family's involvement?

  • Be prepared to travel to the centre for two (2) to three (3) sessions each week for about six (6) weeks,
  • Each session takes about 45 minutes,
  • There is no cost to the family, and
  • Sessions are held Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons.

Extensions of skills to the home.

The home program starts after the training. Parents work with a facilitator on an individualized program to generalize skills to other settings.

Liaison with Schools / Day Cares.

Centre personnel will liaise with school / day care personnel if parents request this type of involvement. Centre personnel can assist with child management techniques.
