Community Tree Planting Day

Community Tree Planting Day - Cattana Wetlands, Sunday 2 August 2009 at 9am

Coinciding with National Tree Day, Council is inviting the community to come to a tree planting day and sausage sizzle at Cattana Wetlands on Sunday 2 August at 9am.

Please find attached a poster detailing the event. Council would appreciate if you could pass on these details to your contacts to help promote the event.

Major work has been underway to rehabilitate the site, including the construction of an access road, car park and toilets, picnic shelters, walking tracks and bird hide to create a nature-based recreation park for future generations to enjoy.

Around 10,000 trees have already been planted and Council aims to get another 2,000 trees planted on this day, before the park is officially opened to the public later in the year.

The rehabilitation project, via Dunne Road in Smithfield, is being jointly funded by Council and the State Government's 150th Local Infrastructure Program.

If you wish to join us, please make sure you have suitable sunsafe clothes, including sturdy footwear, gloves and hat.

Please contact me for any further information.

The Cairns Amateurs Racing Carnival is an annual event held around early in September. A small meeting in 1959, designed to bring city and country together, has expanded over the years to become one of Australia's premier Spring horse racing carnivals.

The Carnival, held in the tropical North Queensland city of Cairns, operates over four days of celebrations, focusing around two days of horse racing. It is complemented by a host of social activities, some formal and some very informal. Visitors to Cairns for this event are welcomed to a growing cosmopolitan city, the population of which increases by a few thousand over the Carnival weekend.

The Carnival attracts locals and visitors to the region, particularly southern corporate executives and their guests who are present due to the involvement of our major national corporate Sponsors. Cairns Amateurs has something for everyone – horse racing, fashion, socialising and celebrities. Social events include Members-only and corporate functions over the four days, as well as events and areas for the general public on both race days. The beautiful mild September climate entices large crowds to enjoy the racing and entertainment conducted at the course.
