2/17 RNSWR History

On the 5th December 1987, 2/17 RNSWR, as part of 8 Brigade, was formed as a result of the linking of the 2nd Battalion (Newcastle-Hunter Region) and the 17th Battalion (Northern, North Western Sydney, Central Coast and Central Western NSW regions), The Royal New South Wales Regiment. Officers and men forming the new Battalion were drawn from the linked battalions.

On the 1st of July 1994, as a result of the 2nd Division reorganisation, the rifle companies at Bathurst and Orange were transferred to the 1st/19th Battalion and the rifle company originally at Arncliffe (formerly part of 4th/3rd Bn), now at Rockdale, joined the Battalion. In addition Bravo Company was formed as a special conditions rifle company adding another dimension to the Battalion’s training program. In 1997 Delta Company was added to the Battalion from 6 Brigade following the reorganisation of the Ready Reserve. In 1999, Bravo Coy was relocated to Erina (its former home) and its special conditions role was transferred to Delta Company (GRSR) - Ready Reserve. In 2000, in anticipation of the cessation of the Ready Reserve conditions of service for the soldiers of Delta Company, the company was redesignated a General Reserve rifle company, offering special conditions of service, and was moved to the Blacktown Depot.
