Profiles of some of our soldiers in 2/17 RNSWR

APCs and Soliders in Combined Arms Training

Combined Arms Training with APCs

Name: Private Adam S. *

Age: 23

Years of Service: 3 years 6 months

Civilian Occupation: Student at UNSW studying Arts/History. Currently in final year planning to complete a Diploma in Education in 2002.

Reason for Joining: I was in cadets at school. I was looking for a bit of cash and something interesting to do.

Military Occupation: Infantry Rifleman - A Coy (Pymble)

Career Highlights: I went to the Recruit Training Centre in Kapooka in December 1998 and enjoyed it tremendously (I lost 25kg over the six-week course). I started my Rifleman training in April 1999, back when it was a two-week course. I remember it being very cold - Puckapunyal, Victoria in autumn. That was worlds apart from Kapooka. In July 1999, I was a rifleman in a section as part of Exercise Malo Boy which was another enjoyable camp.

I also did my Assault Pioneer Basic course in January 2000. That was an excellent course - as I was exposed to a completely new facet of the Army. It was more challenging and rewarding than my previous courses. I followed that up with the Advanced course, which covered demolitions, mine clearance and watermanship. Demolitions’ training was awesome! I sunk a boat during the course - I was awarded the submariner award for that effort.

In October 2000, I spent three months as part of the rifle company that went to Butterworth in Malaysia. We were away for Christmas and New Year, which was a blast. Operations in the Malaysian jungle were extraordinary. At some stages, we could only patrol 200m in an entire day!. We had monkeys watching us and throwing things at us, the jungle was incredibly dense - not like anything I have seen before. This year I completed my combat first aid course.

Why become a Rifleman: I am now a lot more confident and definitely fitter! You cannot pigeonhole soldiers - everyone comes from a very diverse background and you get to know people and how to work with them in very testing circumstances. Exposure to a completely new skill set, the Army alters your mindset. You have to be very practical and organised, focussed and well disciplined. If someone wants exposure to something different that is challenging, the Army Reserve really extends you and tests you. I LOVE IT!

Nuclear, Chemical & Biological Defence Training

Soldiers undertaking CBR training

Name: Private Chris B. *

Age: 22

Years of service: 4 years

Reason for Joining: I like the mateship and meeting good friends. Fitness is also another great advantage and reason for joining.

Civilian Employment: Barman at Kincumber Hotel. I was previously with “Green Corps” doing bush conservation in Australia

Military Occupation: Infantry Rifleman - B Coy (Erina)

Highlights: By far my time as part of Rifle Company Butterworth in Novemeber 2000. I was there until Feb 2001 and it was a great opportunity and chance to see another culture. OP GOLD in October 2000 as part of security searches and vehicle searches for the Olympics. This gave me the chance to see some Volleyball and Modern Pentathalon. I also got to work at the Homebush Olympic site.

I love the outdoors and although there is some theory lessons, I prefer to get out there and do things in the field. I like to have a go and they don’t mind if you make mistakes because that’s how you learn. On the physical side, it gets you to stay fit unlike many of my school friends who would be lucky to run around the block.

You develop self-discipline and having to maintain a good dress and bearing in the Army suits my career in the hospitality industry.

I have learnt to have respect and I take pride in my work.

Future Aims: I want to join the full time Army
