The Battalion conducts monthly
training weekends and an annual 16
day exercise (two working weeks with
the weekends either end). For
example in 1999 the exercise was
designed to practice skills involved
in Vital Asset Protection and we
defended RAAF base Williamtown
from enemy special force elements
intent on sabotaging the FA-18
operations. The 2001 exercise is to be
held in Shoal Water Bay QLD and is
based around a more conventional
bush battle field.

However during 2000 we had many additional tasks to perform. The year started with Operation Tasman Reserve, a 2week exchange with a New Zealand Reserve unit. After we returned most of the training for the year was focused on our security role for the Olympics – Operation Gold. Many of our members provided this valuable service for 3 Months full time while others who could not afford more time away from their civilian employment were on the operation for 2 weeks or so. About the same time we were also called upon to provide troops for the security force at RAAF base Butterworth in
Malaysia, a task not previously given to Reserve Soldiers.

Training weekends are varied
in emphasis and conduct.
Some are mainly teaching
soldierly skills and others are
designed to practice and test
soldiers in the art of war. For
example we have deployed the
battalion by Caribou aircraft at
night with no lights using
night vision equipment to clear
the Burrendong Dam area of
enemy elements using it as a
base for harassment of the
Central West. Other training
weekends have included such
things as combining live fire at
ranges near Canberra with a
visit to the Australian War
Memorial to familiarise the
soldiers with the exhibits
relating to our Battalion's
history.

We also have had many opportunities to showcase the unit in formal ceremonies. We provided the guard of honour for the Prime Minister during the celebrations to commemorate the 100th anniversiary of the awarding of the first Victoria Cross to an Australian – Sir Neville Howse an Orange resident. We also exercised the freedom of the City of Orange at the same time to march through the streets with Colours flying and Drums beating in full battle kit. More recently we participated in the Army 100th birthday parade in Canberra. (More photo ops here)

At 1/19 RNSWR we take what we do seriously and strive for excellence but we also have a lot of fun on the way. We welcome new soldiers with a will to rise to any challenge presented
