MISSION
The role and mission of the unit is to provide Ground Based Air Defence (GBAD) in support of Australian Defence Force (ADF) operations.
ROLE
The unit carries out this role as part of the ADF Air Defence System (ADFADS). Within this context, Air Defence is all measures designed to nullify or reduce the effectiveness of hostile air action. The ADFADS is joint in nature and consists of an integration of assets such as aircraft, ground or ship based Air Defence (AD) weapons, and surveillance and target acquisition devices.
Ground Based Air Defence is an integral and essential component of the ADFAS and comprises the land-based weapons that are used in Air Defence. Ground Based Air Defence can operate independently or in conjunction with other Air Defence platforms. The GBAD elements of the Australian Defence Force are provided by Army and is only contained within the 16th Air Defence Regiment.
TASKS
In providing GBAD, 16 AD Regt may be required to perform a variety of tasks that include; area defence, point defence, route defence and airfield defence. In addition, the RBS-70 weapon system can provide mobile defence and an air ambush capability.
