GENERAL INFO
13 Field Squadron (13 Fd Sqn) is an Army Reserve unit consisting of a Squadron Headquarters (SHQ), 2 x Combat Engineer Troops (1 & 2 Troop) and a Support Troop located at Irwin Barracks, Karrakatta, WA ( Entrance to Irwin Barracks is from Stubbs Terrace).
The Squadron parades Tuesday evenings between the hours of 7 pm and 10 pm and one training weekend a month, generally the third weekend of the month, in various locations throughout Western Australia.
In addition to parade nights and training weekends the Squadron participates in an annual field exercise of two weeks duration. The annual field exercise can take place anywhere throughout Australia and provides interesting and exciting challenges and tasks.
As a member of the Army Reserve you will receive tax-free pay during your training and whilst working with the Squadron.
The training you receive in the Army Reserve may gain you civilian qualifications, for example, an Administration Clerk will receive Certificate II in Public Administration and a Transport Driver will receive a Medium Rigid truck license.
There are many jobs available at 13 Field Squadron ranging from Combat Engineer to Plant Operator. A Unit Recruiter will be able to tell you what positions are available upon enquiry to the Squadron.
ROLE OF ROYAL AUSTRALIAN ENGINEERS
The primary role of Royal Australian Engineers is to provide geospatial, mobility, counter-mobility, survivability and sustainability support to the Army.
They achieve this by building roads, bridges, and airstrips; by demolishing selected buildings, bridges, and laying minefields, as well as, building various types of barriers to halt or slow the enemy's progress.

PAY AND ALLOWANCES
Just like any regular job, the time you spend working in the Army Reserve will be paid for. What's more, the pay you receive is tax-free. This pay does not affect Austudy, Social Security, or any other Government allowances.
All your tax-free pay is directly credited to your nominated bank account.
Along with your tax-free pay the Army Reserve pays for all your training, uniforms and boots, all equipment required to do your job, and meal and travel allowances where applicable.
ADDITIONAL ALLOWANCES
Field Allowances - paid at a daily rate when in the field for extended periods.
Meal Allowance - paid when travelling during service time, or when working extended hours.
Travel Allowance - paid when travelling for duty or training.
Separation Allowance - paid to members who are married or recognised de-facto when on extended periods of service away from home.
Additional welfare support to families is also available through the Defence Reserve Support Council.
APPLICATION PROCESS
HOW DO I APPLY?
The first thing to do is contact the 13th Brigade Recruiting Cell located at the front of Irwin Barracks and arrange an interview with a Recruiting Officer to discuss your suitability and career prospects within the Army Reserve.
After an interview with the Recruiting Officer and a decision has been made regarding your career choice, you will be referred to Defence Force Recruiting where appointments will be arranged for testing and further interviews.
SELECTION PROCESS
The selection process involves:
- Aptitude Testing,
- Medical Assessment,
- Psychologist Interview,
- Defence Force Interview,
- Fitness Test, and in some cases
- Selection Board, and
- Trade Interview
Once all testing and interviews are completed successfully you will be given a date to enlist into the Army Reserve.
