Why the Elephant on our Badge?
In the late 1800's, Lord Carrington, the Governor of NSW, was fond of the idea of raising volunteer Cavalry units in the Bush. However with no available funds, it was the Lord himself who funded the necessary equipment and firearms to provide function to the Cavalry. The Carrington family made their name and wealth through trade in India, where the Elephant was the workhorse, hence it was adorned on their family crest and thus adopted by the 16th LH (Hunter River Lancers).
