Anzac Day 2009

25 April 2009
Op Astute Re-dedication of a Memorial in Dare

Special guests attended a re-dedication of a Memorial in Dare, outside of Dili, East Timor, on ANZAC Day. Minister for Defence Science and Personnel, the Hon. Warren Snowdon, MP, was one of the many invited guests, including both the President and Prime Minister of East Timor.

The Memorial was originally established by the 2/2nd Independent Company (later Commandos) to thank the East Timorese for helping them and the 2/4th Independent Company at the time of the Japanese invasion during World War II. The Memorial was also to remind the local community that their assistance would never be forgotten.

The Memorial has recently been refurbished, and a plaque will mark the original site of the Memorial dedicated in 1969. The Memorial now consists of a school as well as a small museum and café. There to witness the re-dedication was one of the last surviving Timorese volunteers (Creados) who helped the Australian soldiers during the war.
