Anzac Day 2009

25 April 2009
OP Astute Dawn Service

Anzac Day was commemorated in East Timor by all units serving with the International Stabilisation Force. A Dawn Service was held at Camp Phoenix, where official guests included the Minister for Defence Science and Personnel, The Hon. Warren Snowdon, MP, The Australian and New Zealand Ambassadors and other dignitaries. Members of the Australian and New Zealand community were also in attendance as well as several members of the local Turkish community. Approximately 300 people attended the ceremony.

Before dawn, guests participated in the traditional ‘gunfire’ breakfast. After the Dawn Service, deployed personnel and invited guests shared a more substantial meal before the soldiers began some of the more traditional Anzac Day activities, including Two-Up and Crown & Anchor and a cricket match against their Kiwi counterparts.
