ANZAC Day 2007
26 April 2007 The Australian Minister for Defence the Honourable Dr Brendan Nelson and Vice Chief of the Defence Force Lieutenant-General Ken Gillespie (VCDF) participated in several ceremonies across the Gallipoli Peninsula during the 2007 Anzac observance. On Wednesday 24 April, the Turkish people commemorated the defence of their homeland with an International Service at the Mehmetcik Abide memorial. The service included a fly-past by the Turkish Air Force display team, the Turkish Stars, and a march-past by Turkish veterans, International military forces and a performance by the Mehteran Company. Ceremonies also took place at the French Monument in Morto Bay and a Commonwealth Memorial at Cape Helles. On Anzac Day, the Minister and VCDF joined thousands of people for the annual Dawn Service within Anzac Cove. The morning ceremony was followed by a uniquely Australian event at the Lone Pine cemetery and a similar New Zealand event at Chunuk Bair. The Minister and VCDF also attended the Turkish 57th Regiment Memorial Service as part of the 2007 Anzac event. The Minister and VCDF laid floral tributes at each of the memorial services on behalf of Australia and the Australian Defence Force. The ADF’s participation in the 2007 Anzac ceremony included a contingent from Australia’s Federation Guard and the Royal Australian Navy Band. |
