Soldiers, sailors and airmen of Australia’s Federation Guard (AFG) took post as the catafalque party at the Commonwealth Memorial Service at Cape Helles.

The AFG members at post as the catafalque party while their cousins from the New Zealand Defence Force acted as wreath orderlies on April 24.

The Governor General of Australia, Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce, AC. laid a wreath for the Australian fallen at Cape Helles.

The Cape Helles memorial was constructed in 1924 and stands on the tip of the Gallipoli Peninsular. The memorial bears 21,000 names of UK and Indian soldiers who died throughout the peninsular and Australian soldiers who died at Cape Helles.

The British landings at Cape Helles coincided with the Australian and New Zealand landings at ANZAC Cove on 25 April 1915.

The British troops landed on five beaches - S, V, W, X ,Y- at Cape Helles and received six Victoria Crosses for their actions on W beach.

The AFG was officially launched on 7 March 2000 at Parliament House in Canberra for the INTERFET welcome home parade.

Ceremonial events have taken the AFG to England, Turkey, Greece, South Korea, Singapore and France.
