Flight Test Pilot Flight Lieutenant (R'td) Randall Green next to a prototype version of the A94-101 Sabre aircraft. Flight Lieutenant Green joined No1 Course at Point Cook in 1948 and after graduating in 1949 he joined 87 Squadron flying A52 DH 98 Mosquitos. In 1952, during the Korean War, he flew A77 Gloucester Meteors from Kimpo, South Korea with 77 Squadron. Flight Lieutenant Green recalls his Test Pilot colleague, the late Bill Scott, who in 1953 was the first pilot to break "The Sound Barrier" in Australia flying an A94 Sabre. In 1955, Flight Lieutenant Green was excited by the prospect of flying the The Sabre for the first time, and still recalls the joy of flying what he describes as "A gentleman’s aircraft". "Its very comfortable" he says, "the Americans really know how to build them", they just go to a furniture store, find the most comfortable seat, and build the aircraft around it", It's a beautifully balanced aircraft in every aspect! Flight Lieutenant Green later travelled to Farnborough in the UK to undergo training at the Empire Test Pilot School. After completing the one year course he returned to Australia to operate as a test tilot at the Aircraft Research and Development Unit (ARDU), After retiring from the RAAF he flew as test pilot for Hawker De Havilland.
