Australian Peacekeepers Memorial Service

14 September

A commemorative ceremony to mark the 64th anniversary of Australia’s involvement in peacekeeping was held at the future sire of the Australian Peacekeeping memorial on Anzac Parade, Canberra, on September 14. AFG provided the catafalque party along with a member of the Australian Federal Police. There was a large turnout for the event with all members of the Guard who have received an ASM in attendance.

Veterans Affairs Minister Warren Snowden said Australia has a proud record of peacekeeping, participating in more than 50 UN and multi-national operations.

“Currently, almost 600 Australian Defence Force and Australian Federal Police personnel are deployed in operations across the globe in locations including the middle east, Timor-Leste, Solomon Islands and Sudan” Mr Snowdon said.

AFP assistant commissioner Frank Pendergast said “the courage, tenacity, resourcefulness and empathy shown by our peacekeepers in the face of challenging and dangerous environments is a continued reflection of the Australian spirit.”
