Australia’s Federation Guard supports Legacy Week

For the last three years Legacy Week has been a significant event in the calendar of Australia’s Federation Guard (AFG). Legacy Week took place from 28 August to 3 September and was officially opened by the Governor-General in Sydney, where Australia’s Federation Guard members conducted a Catafalque Party at Martin Place. Later that week members of the Guard took three mornings out from their training schedule to lend support by selling Legacy badges around Canberra.

Over three mornings Guardsmen worked in tri-Service groups of three dressed in ceremonial uniforms. They were amazed by the generosity of the public, with the Guard raising just shy of $75,000 by selling Legacy badges, wristbands and pens in Civic, Belconnen, Fyshwick and Woden.

Christopher Hunter from Legacy visited the Guard on 7 September to present the Unit a certificate of appreciation, making comment that Legacy Canberra were amazed how the unit raised over a quarter of all Legacy Week earnings for Canberra that week.

Legacy is dedicated to caring for the families of deceased veterans. Today, Legacy’s caring and compassionate service assists over 100,000 widows, and 1900 children and dependants with a disability. Legacy is a voluntary organisation supported by veterans, servicemen and women, and volunteers drawn from all walks of life. Their support and services now extend to include the dependants of members of today's Australian Defence Force who lose their lives as a result of their military service.
