Adventure Training

Australia’s Federation Guard (AFG) is regularly tasked with providing ceremonial support for various events. Due to the nature of the unit’s core activities AFG runs a lot of adventurous and other interesting training for Guardsmen in order to build teamwork, maintain peak physical fitness and provide variety in the ceremonial training schedule. The adventurous and physical training activities that are conducted at AFG range extensively, as seen by this year’s activities alone.

Some of the activities AFG has completed this year are: White Water Rafting, the Blue Mountains 6 Foot Track hike and a Jenolan Cave tour, running the Canberra Marathon, several Open Water Scuba Diving qualification courses, trekking the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea in five days, an Advanced Driver training (skid pan and advanced car control) course, Nordic Skiing trip in the Perisher Valley region (with a snow survival component) and a Kayaking trip. With many more activities being coordinated for the rest of the year, such as Abseiling, Rock Climbing, a High Wire Confidence Course activity, trekking and fly fishing in Tasmania and a Bike Riding trek through the Hunter Valley, 2011 will have proven to be a very exciting training year.

Corporal Aaron Gorman who is currently a Section Commander posted to AFG says of his time at AFG, ‘I posted in at the start of 2011 as a Guardsman. My experience of adventurous training in my nine years of service in the Army was at best very limited. When my posting order was struck from SCMA I was excited to hear of the active role commanders at the Guard have taken in regards to conducting adventurous training activities. I have had a blast being involved in the planning and participation of activities. Completing the Kokoda Track trek was a demanding and solemn experience which I will never forget. I look forward to the rest of the year and what our team can produce for our next adventure.’
