Roles

  • act as a repository for peace operations expertise and experience;
  • monitor international peace operations issues;
  • assist ADF units and individuals train for peace operations;
  • develop doctrine, procedures and tactics for peace operations; and
  • represent the ADF on peace operations matters at seminars, conferences and the like.

Organisation

The Centre is headed by a Director (Lieutenant Colonel (O5) equivalent) and is manned by three staff officers (Major (O4) equivalents), one from each service. The staff officers have responsibilities for:

Activities

Planned activities include:

  • The conduct of a ADF International Peace Operation Seminars each year,
    Continued assistance in delivering peace operations education for:
    • Australian Command & Staff Colleges;
    • Deployed Forces Support Unit ;
      (Note: This unit is responsible for coordinating pre-deployment training for Australian contingents or individuals assigned to UN or multi-national peace operations);
    • Singapore Armed Forces Command and Staff College;
    • Australian Federal Police.
  • Specific peace operations training from the Australian perspective to regional nations;
  • Specific training and briefing of individuals or organisations on request.
  • Continued development and refinement of ADF Peace Operations Doctrine;
  • Conducting the biennial bi-lateral Exercise PIRAP JABIRU with the Thai Supreme Command;
  • Incorporation of the lessons learned from Australian and other nations' peace operations into an information database;
  • Attendance at relevant international conferences and seminars;
  • Assisting the UN Training and Evaluation Service with the development of Standardised Generic Training Modules for all personnel deploying to UN Missions.

Craig Sheehan, of the Australian Federal Police, depicted in riot gear during deployment. (19kb)Opportunities exist, through government-to-government arrangements, for appropriately qualified officers from other countries to be attached to the staff of the ADF Peacekeeping Centre.

The Peacekeeping Centre would expect an attached officer to contribute to both the Centre's activities and his/her national requirements to produce, for example, doctrine for peace operations. The officer would also be required to actively participate in any seminars organised by the Centre.

Attachments would normally meet the following criteria:

  • Ideally, of six months duration;
  • The officer would have a minimum rank level of Major (Equivalent);
  • The officer's background and experience would include recent United Nations or multi-national peace operations experience; and
  • The officer will have been allocated specific national tasks by his/her Government to complete during the course of the attachment.
