Group Captain Forster Breckenridge

Born in Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia and raised on his parent's cattle station, Group Captain Breckenridge joined the Royal Australian Air Force in 1978 as a communications technician and served at various air bases including Laverton (Victoria, Australia), Tengah (Singapore), Butterworth (Malaysia), Glenbrook (New South Wales, Australia) and Pearce (Western Australia), reaching the rank of Corporal. During his time at Pearce he commenced engineering studies at Curtin University in 1986 and was accepted for commissioning in 1987, graduating from No 102 Air Traffic Control (ATC) Course in 1988. He served as an air traffic controller, training officer and supervisor in Darwin aerodrome and approach control and later in the military sector in Sydney airport's Terminal Control Unit as an area and approach controller. In 1994 he was appointed as the Chief Instructor for the Air Transportable Telecommunications Unit which was responsible for expeditionary Air Force communications and air traffic control systems including mobile towers and radars. Following a further air traffic control tour at the Sydney military sector, in 1997 he was selected for a HQ 41WG ATC staff position where, in addition to other duties, he was responsible for the training development and implementation of the Battlefield Airspace Operations Course and ATC parachute operations to support Joint Airspace Management.

Promoted to SQNLDR in 1999, he continued as a HQ staff officer, culminating in this role as the lead airspace planner for OP WARDEN (East Timor) followed by appointment as the Brigade Air Liaison Officer to 1st Brigade in Darwin in 2000. This was followed by ATC refresher training and appointment as the Operations Flight Commander and later Executive Officer at No 44 Wing's Darwin Detachment in 2002-2003.

In 2003 he was the first Senior Air traffic Control Officer at Baghdad International Airport in Iraq and was promoted to Wing Commander whilst on operations. The Iraq tour of duty was followed by Singapore Command and Staff Course in 2004. On completion of staff course he was appointed Commanding Officer No 386 Expeditionary Combat Support Squadron at RAAF Richmond in 2005, participating in numerous operations and exercises including as the Deputy Air Component Commander for Operation ASTUTE (Timor Leste) in 2006. In 2007 he was posted to the ADF Airworthiness Coordination and Policy Agency for the initial set-up of the Aviation Support Environment cell. This was followed by appointment as the ATC Reform Program manager in Air Force HQ in late 2007 charged with developing progressive ATC reforms to achieve a sustainable ADF ATC capability. He was promoted to Group Captain and assumed his current command of No 44 Wing in November 2008, responsible for the delivery of the Australian Defence Force JBAC capability.

In addition to Operation and Long-service medals, GPCAPT Breckenridge has been awarded a Commendation for Distinguished Service and Commander Australian Theatre and Air Commander Australia commendations.

Forster is married to Ann and has two sons. Matthew, 24 is currently an Army infantry Lieutenant at 3RAR and Jack, 14 is in high school. Forster enjoys tennis, running, sailing and just about any sport. Hobbies include reading, oil painting, and building model aeroplanes. He especially enjoys socializing with family and friends.
