The 2009 Australian Defence Force Parliamentary Program Launch
The Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Support, the Hon Dr Mike Kelly AM MP today launched the Australian Defence Force Parliamentary Program (ADFPP) for 2009. The program, which commenced in 2001, is designed to offer Senators and Members of Parliament the opportunity to spend time with the men and women of the Australian Defence Force (ADF).
Addressing those attending the launch were Dr Kelly, Chief of Defence Force Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston AC AFC, and past ADFPP participants Senator Kate Lundy and Mr Barry Haase MP.
In his opening address, Dr Kelly reminded those present of the importance of the ADF and the subsequent responsibility of current Parliamentarians. “Parliament House stares down towards the Australian War Memorial, it’s a reminder to all Parliamentarians about the responsibilities we have” said Dr Kelly.
“At the human level, more of us also need a deeper appreciation of the effort it takes to become a proficient and professional member of the ADF.”
ACM Houston also conveyed his support for the program; “After their first-hand experiences I hope the politicians will share my pride in seeing our people do what they do best, and continue to develop their own understanding of strategic issues.”
Senator Kate Lundy took part in the ADFPP in 2008, where she spent time on an SAS selection course. “I didn’t know what to expect and I can say it was an eye-opening and memorable experience,” said Senator Lundy. “It’s tough but for a reason — and it’s one reason why they are the best in the world.
2009 is the third time round for Mr Barry Haase MP, who proudly sports the boomerang badge of politicians who have, in subsequent years, returned to the program.
Mr Haase has been engaged through the ADFPP with both the 21st Construction Squadron in the Kimberley and Young Endeavour. “We are responsible to our constituents to know as much as we can about funding for the ADF — and there is no better briefing than being in the field, enjoying the practical experience that this program offers” said Mr Haase.
The ADFPP, whilst offering invaluable experiences to Parliamentarians, also has complementary outcomes for men and women of the ADF. The ADFPP offers and exchange element, where men and women of the ADF are invited to spend a week in a Senator or Member of Parliament’s office during a Parliamentary Sitting Period.
“When the politicians arrive at the units I want our people to relax, to engage with the politicians, welcome them and show them what we are capable of” said ACM Houston, “I want the politicians to come away knowing we have three Services that maintain the highest defence standards.”
Dr Kelly applauded the now 43 Parliamentarians who have signed up for the 2009 program and encouraged those who had not yet committed to an attachment to do so. Dr Kelly said. “This is a great opportunity for both Parliamentarians and members of the ADF, and one I am proud to support”.
