Deakin aims to be Australia's most progressive university, internationally recognised for the relevance, innovation and responsiveness of its teaching and learning, research, partnerships and international activities. The fact that Deakin has won the prestigious Australian "University of the Year Award" twice - first in 1995-1996 for Outstanding Technology in Education and secondly in 1999-2000 for Outstanding Education and Training Partnerships - provides tangible evidence of this University's success and the high esteem in which it is held.
Deakin has five campuses: two in Melbourne , two in Geelong and one in Warrnambool. In addition to traditional campus-based teaching at these locations, we are committed to also providing flexible learning options through innovative teaching and delivery methods. In this, and other ways, Deakin provides opportunities, not only for school-leavers from metropolitan areas, but also for students from remote and isolated areas, international students, mature-age students and indigenous Australian students to access the benefits of higher education. More than 11,500 of our 34,000 students study externally. There are approximately 7,000 international students studying our courses in Australia and throughout the world.
We see the fact that this University has campuses in regional and rural Victoria , as well as in Melbourne , as positive aspects of Deakin's character. The University is committed to working with rural and regional communities, particularly those in and around Geelong and Warrnambool, to make its teaching and research relevant and responsive to the needs of those communities.
