Midshipmen Crew the STS James Craig
12 December 06
In November and December 2006, ADFA first year Midshipmen were invited to crew the STS James Craig as part of the Sydney Heritage Fleet restoration program. Two crews of Midshipmen took part in the normal running of STS James Craig in seven day rotations in and around Darling Harbour.
Duties onboard included assistance with any functions booked on ship, standing a two watch system on the ships gangway, fire patrols and other duties as detailed by Heritage Fleet crew.
The seven days spent on James Craig and involvement with the Sydney Heritage Fleet restoration program gave Midshipmen a unique insight into their maritime ancestry. They were introduced to skills and techniques that are no longer used in the modern ship building industry and acquired the confidence and knowledge required to participate as a crew member of an early 1900’s sailing vessel. It also gave MIDN the opportunity to manage a minor vessel duty watch routine whilst alongside a busy wharf, furthering the skills they learnt during the Navy Officer Year One program.
On completion of the training, all participating Midshipmen and staff members became members of the Sydney Heritage Fleet allowing them to roster on as a James Craig sailor for day sails during the following twelve months.
