Athletics Carnival

"The Athletics Carnival gives cadets an opportunity to foster squadron spirit and to push themselves in competition," Cadet in Charge, Officer Cadet Sean Hobson, 2 Bravo Squadron.

The ADFA Athletics Carnival was run at the Australian Institute of Sport's Athletics Track on 29 October.

Originally started in 1987, this year six squadrons, covering first, second and third year, were competing for the Athletics Shield.

Events were run covering most track and field sports including 100m, 200m, hurdles, high jump, long jump and more.

Competitors came dressed in their squadron colours (and face paint), urged on by their cheer squads in the stands.

Commentators provided a consistent combination of wit and entertainment through the day, even taking text messages from spectators in the crowd.

Highlights of the day were the males 100m, won by Office Cadet Sean Hobson with a time of 11.63s and the male javelin, won by Officer Cadet Renzo Martinez Pawelczyk with a huge throw of 45.45m.

Not to be outdone, the ladies led from the front setting two new Academy records: Officer Cadet Caitlin Holcombe leaping an incredible 156cm for high jump and Officer Cadet Emily McSkimming winning the 5000m in a record time of 20:14m.

The most anticipated event of the day, the Staff versus Cadets relay, did not disappoint. The Academy Physical Training Instructors and Squadron Leader David Brewer (racing in his Sunday best) took on the cadets; unfortunately for the Staff the cadets proved too fast -chasing down the staff and easily winning the relay.

Of course, only one squadron can be crowned victorious and this year that was 2 Bravo Squadron who showed dominating performances across the carnival.
