Australian Women's Dragon Boat Crew Results

7 August 2008

Six ADFA girls selected for the National Women’s Dragon Boat Crew have helped take Australia to fourth place in the 2000m and 500m races at the Eighth Asian Dragon Boat Championships in Penang, Malaysia.

Midshipman Amy Hyatt (RAN), Midshipman Katie Kruger (RAN), Officer Cadet Anneka Hughes (Army), Officer Cadet Hayley Fletcher (Army), Officer Cadet Alyssa Burnham (RAAF) and Officer Cadet Stephanie Martis (RAAF) also helped take the Crew to fifth and sixth in the 200m races, and fourth overall.

On returning to Australia, OFFCDT Martis said, “with so many countries competing for national honour, the atmosphere at the races was electric. It was a real privilege to be able to race for Australia and with such a committed and strong crew”.

The Australian National Team was comprised of about 65 paddlers, drummers and sweeps. More than 600 Australians competed during the Penang International Dragon Boat Festival.

“There was a great spirit of international community and cooperation at the games, especially between paddlers of different countries,” said OFFCDT Martis. “Everyone was very friendly and there was great sportsmanship amongst the teams despite the heat, haze and humidity. The festival was a great success with some very close and competitive races.

“Overall the Australian Women's crew were very happy with the efforts and results of the festival and have certainly put ACT on the map as a competitive and strong team in the world of dragon boating”.
