On 16 January 2009, Trooper Mark Donaldson became the first Australian to be awarded the Victoria Cross (VC) for Australia.
The VC is Australia’s pre-eminent award for acts of bravery in wartime and is Australia's highest military honour.
It is awarded to persons who, in the presence of the enemy, display the most conspicuous gallantry; a daring or pre-eminent act of valour or self-sacrifice; or extreme devotion to duty.
Speaking at the Australian Defence Force Academy, Trooper Donaldson and his colleagues provided cadets, midshipmen and staff with a rare insight into the operations of the Special Air Services Regiment and into the events which ultimately saw him receive a VC.
On 2 September 2008 Trooper Donaldson deliberately drew enemy fire to allow his wounded mates to be moved to safety. When he realised that a coalition interpreter was lying on exposed ground, he risked his own life, by running across eighty metres of exposed ground, to rescue the interpreter and bring him back to safety.
Trooper Donaldson’s actions not only saved the life of the coalition interpreter but also ensured the safety of his fellow soldiers and members of the coalition forces.
Trooper Donaldson and his team highlighted the importance of good leadership; being well trained; knowing your weapons systems; and looking after your mates.
Trooper Donaldson encouraged cadets and midshipman to do their best and to strive for excellence, which are core values of the Australian Defence Force Academy.
