In support of CanTeen, the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) Community Service VECA (CSV) organised Exercise Outreach for 33 CanTeen youth from the ACT and NSW.
CanTeen is the national support organisation for youth living with cancer, aged between 12 and 24.
The charity’s mission is to support, develop and empower young people living with cancer.
The participants of Exercise Outreach included CanTeen youth, some of whom were siblings or friends of the youth who had experienced cancer, CanTeen staff, and midshipmen and officer cadets from ADFA.
In the morning, volunteers from ADFA had the opportunities to interact with the participants in canoeing and dragon-boating activities at Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra.
The group also enjoyed a barbeque lunch after the water activities.
Following that, the day’s activities continued on ADFA grounds. Many CanTeen youth and ADFA volunteers attempted the Overhead Water Obstacles course in the Indoor Sports Complex, and were given Military Self-Defence demonstrations.
Additionally other activities such as volleyball and basketball also enabled the participants to get to know each other better.
The last activity was Weapon Training Simulation System, which CanTeen youth enthusiastically fired the F-88 Austyer under the guidance of midshipmen and cadets volunteers.
A fun-filled day organised for the youth to have some military experience and play sports was extremely fulfilling for the volunteers.
CanTeen youth and staff appreciated the efforts of volunteers and expressed their anticipation for next year’s visit.
