ADFA members would have to be quick if they were going to salute the Chief of Air Forces (CAF) new star plated “RAAF 1”, at the ADFA Racing Circuit.
Chief of Air Force, Air Marshal Mark Binskin, swapped the boardroom for the race track when he visited the Aeronautical Civil and Mechanical Engineering (ACME) Racing team at the Australian Defence Force Academy.
ACME Racing participates in Formula SAE, which is an international team-based competition where student members of the Society of Automotive Engineers design, build and compete against each other with custom-built small high-performance race cars.
Teams have to build a car aimed at the amateur autocross (hill climbs and motorkana) driver market and must develop a manufacturing plan for a small-scale production run, and are assessed not only on production cost, but on the business case they prepare in a fictional attempt to sell the product.
Competitions are held in the USA, Europe and Australia every year.
