The ADFA Performing Arts Company provides an opportunity for Midshipmen and Officer Cadets to express their musical and theatrical talents in the ADFA environment. The main activity of the Performing Arts VECA is a musical theatre performance staged every year in mid-August for staff, family of Midshipmen and Officer Cadets and the general public.
The Performing Arts VECA provides opportunities for all cadets to take part in the cast, chorus, band and stage and technical crew aspects of the performance. Participation in the Production is voluntary, however, Midshipmen and Officer Cadets are required to fulfil their obligation once committed.
This year the ADFA PAC is performing the musical 'Crazy For You' at the Queanbeyan Performing Arts Centre from the 15th-17th of August.
Crazy for You is Ken Ludwig's 1992 adaptation of George and Ira Gershwin's 1930 musical comedy Girl Crazy. The plot concerns Bobby Child, the son of a prominent U.S East Coast banker.
Though he'd rather be a song-and-dance man, Bobby is forced to enter the family business and his first assignment is to foreclose on the Gaiety Theatre in Deadrock, Arizona. But when he falls in love with Polly Baker, daughter of the Gaiety's owner, Bobby dedicates himself to saving the theatre. And how does any self-respecting musical comedy hero accomplish this task? By staging a fabulous show, naturally, with Bobby himself in the lead.
Of course, the plot is a mere peg upon which to hang some of the Gershwins' best-loved songs, including ‘Embracable You,’ ‘Bidin' My Time,’ and the show-stopping ‘I Got Rhythm,’.
The productions in the past have been a great success for the academy and we hope to continue the tradition this year. Performances on the evenings of the 15th-17th August will begin at 1900 h, with a matinee performance also occurring on Sat, 17 Aug 13 at 1000 h.
